The First Deadpool & Wolverine Trailer Has Released

After a long wait, the third instalment of the Deadpool franchise has finally released a trailer showing the Merc with a Mouth in a whole new adventure. This time he is joining the MCU with Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine, reunited after the characters first fought one another in ‘X-Men Origins: Wolverine’. Along with the trailer we have finally been given the title of the movie, ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’. Simple yet so sweet. So we will be doing a Deadpool & Wolverine Trailer Breakdown to point out all of the key details and any easter eggs hidden in the 1st Deadpool & Wolverine Trailer.

The Deadpool & Wolverine trailer begins with Wade Wilson celebrating his birthday with his closest friends. Many characters from the Deadpool franchise make their return in this movie and we see them on a photo on Wade’s cake. Returning we have Vanessa, Dopinder, Yukio, Negasonic Teenage Warhead, Colossus, Shatterstar, Blind Al, Buck and everyone’s favorite X-Force member, Peter. Unfortunately Domino and Cable seem like they won’t be returning in this franchise and the film could simply just make reference to them and explain that they are off doing their own thing. The Deadpool & Wolverine Trailer does not show these characters again, creating the assumption that these characters will not play key roles in the story, leaving more room for both Deadpool & Wolverine.

Many fans will be happy to see Peter, Shatterstar and Vanessa make their return after their deaths in ‘Deadpool 2’. Deadpool of course, at the end of ‘Deadpool 2’ used Cable’s Time Travel Watch to alter the past, saving Peter and Vanessa. How Shatterstar survived remains to be seen as Wade was not shown helping Shatterstar in his time travel antics. It could be possible that off-screen, Deadpool found a way to help each member of his X-Force survive.

The Deadpool & Wolverine trailer then moves on as we see a glimpse of Wade, head in hands, with Vanessa opposite. This small clip seems to be at a tragic moment in Wade’s life, possibly Vanessa breaking up with him. This would be a good explanation on why Deadpool is so willing to join the MCU, with Vanessa out of his life, he has nothing to keep him in his original universe. This clip is all voiced over by Wade giving a speech at his party and stating that “it’s been a challenging few years”. This is further proven when Vanessa calls Wade “buddy” when telling him to blow out his candles.

Deadpool Arrested By The TVA

We then cut to Wade answering the door to TVA agents, returning from the ‘Loki’ series, and they activate their pruning sticks. Wade makes a joke that “pegging” isn’t new to him but is new to Disney as he winks at the camera. This is one of a few occasions where Deadpool mentions the Disney acquisition of Fox and how the R-Rating is a new thing for Disney. There are bound to be several jokes about this during the movie. A concern for Marvel fans before the third Deadpool movie was announced was that it would be more attuned to Disney standards and will be a softer version of the character, however the Deadpool & Wolverine Trailer proves otherwise.

Wade is then arrested by the TVA and wakes up in a similar looking interrogation room to the one Loki was detained in, only this time Matthew McFayden sits across from him. It has been rumoured that McFayden will be playing the TVA Agent, Paradox, and will be taking on a similar role to Mobius. As Deadpool asks Paradox what he is doing at the TVA, we are then presented with a more modernized TVA with a much newer and sleeker design.

We then hear Paradox explain to Wade that he is special as it shows Wade staring at his original Deadpool suit in a blue locker. In this shot we see that Wade is wearing a blue uniform with a name tag that states that he is a car salesman. There were leaks going around before the Superbowl that the original Deadpool & Wolverine Trailer started with Wade, now retired from his superhero life, now selling cars. It seems that this will be part of the plot of the movie but begs the question, why has Wade quit being the hero. As the Deadpool & Wolverine Trailer continues, we hear Paradox tell Wade that this is his chance to be a “hero among heroes” as Wade is presented with monitors presenting various moments from the MCU including two scenes during  the opening of ‘Avengers: Age of Ultron’, one with Iron Man breaking into the Hydra Base and other, a team up shot of the Avengers. We also see a scene of Thor during ‘Thor: Ragnarok’ as he unleashes his true power as well as various shots of Captain America during the events of ‘Captain America: The Winter Soldier’.

As Deadpool tells Paradox that “Your little cinematic universe is about to change forever’ we see a quick glimpse at the villain of this movie, Cassandra Nova, played by Emma Corrin. This is not officially confirmed, however this has been heavily rumored. Although the Deadpool & Wolverine Trailer shows only this small shot of Cassandra Nova, it will exciting to see if she will make another appearance in any future Deadpool & Wolverine Trailer.

The next shot is of Deadpool walking through a casino, towards a man with a very similar hairstyle to Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine, however @mytimetoshinehello on Twitter/X, has stated that this will be a Wolverine variant called Patch and will be played by a different actor. It could be possible that we may see a John Krasinski scenario where we see a future Wolverine fancast come to the big screen for one time only. It is possible that this Variant of Patch could be playing a game of poker with another rumoured character, Gambit who is rumoured to be played by Channing Tatum. We do not see any sign of the character in the Deadpool & Wolverine Trailer, however it is possible that he may turn up in a future trailer.

Cut back to the TVA where Deadpool tells Paradox that he is “the messiah” and “Marvel Jesus”. Why Deadpool has been recruited by the TVA is unknown at this point, some believe it is due to his time traveling antics at the end of ‘Deadpool 2’ however the TVA may want Deadpool to recruit heroes to face Kang in ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’, however this is from leaks and pure speculative. We get a few quick shots of Wade suiting up in his new Deadpool suit before getting quick shots of Deadpool fighting TVA agents in a snowy forest. We have seen this suit in set photos but seeing it in footage in the Deadpool & Wolverine Trailer is incredible to see. In terms of the snowy forest area, there are a few theories on where this is.

Some believe it is the forested area in Sokovia that we saw at the beginning of ‘Avengers: Age of Ultron’ whilst others suspect that this is the forest where Wolverine was killed at the end of ‘Logan’. From the looks of the Deadpool & Wolverine Trailer it does seem like a significant portion of ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ will be set in the Void however it could be that Deadpool is visiting different time periods within the main MCU continuity.

Deadpool Enters the Void

As the Deadpool & Wolverine Trailer continues, the trailer cuts to an incredible reload shot with Deadpool in front of a ruined 20th Century Fox logo, presumably in the Void which we saw in ‘Loki’. We then see TVA agents running away in a sort of camp in the Void before one agent in chains gets attacked by Alioth making his return after ‘Loki’ Season 1. It is then that we get another shot of people in the Void readying a weapon of sorts. It looks as though there are people who have survived the Void besides Loki and his variants, this could be as a result of many incursions that have occurred resulting in the conflict that will end in ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’.

In true Deadpool fashion, we see Wade slaughter many TVA agents in quick shots as well as the Void Survivors before we get a quick shot of Pyro, returning from ‘X-Men: The Last Stand’ and played by Aaron Stanford once again. It looks like Pyro will be one of these people left in the Void as he wears similar attire to the other survivors we saw earlier. The Deadpool and Wolverine Trailer shows many deaths, just in the short 2 minutes we get so it can be assumed that the movie will include Deadpool getting a much high kill count than we have seen before. The final part of the Deadpool & Wolverine Trailer shows Wade flying through a wall and being knocked to the ground before a shadow looms over him in the shape of Wolverine.

To the left of Deadpool there is a comic book hidden in plain sight. This comic is actually an issue in the 2015 Secret Wars comic run which could be a reference to the ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ movie being connected to ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’. Wolverine stands over Wade as he asks for a hand up, before Wolverine pulls out his claws and goes to attack Wade before cutting to the official title card reading ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’.

Deadpool & Wolverine have not shared the screen since ‘X-Men Origins: Wolverine’ so many fans will look forward to the faithful rematch between these two characters. It will be interesting to see if the next Deadpool & Wolverine Trailer will show more of the two titular characters fighting. This film has been said to be the beginning of the ‘Avengers: Kang Dynasty’ and ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’ event and will be the origins of the Multiversal Avengers team that will be pitted against Kang in the end. With Deadpool & Wolverine once again sharing the screen together, many fans are eager for the film’s release and what surprises lie in store.

All in all the Deadpool & Wolverine Trailer gives us a good glimpse at what the movie has in store for us and it is what many fans have both hoped and expected for the Merc’s return to the big screen after all these years.

Deadpool & Wolverine’ releases in theaters July 26th.
